Until recently, live sports content was believed to be one of the few programming assets immune to over-the-top disruption. However, with major sports entities like the NFL negotiating key distribution deals with platforms like Amazon as linear viewership shows marked declines, it’s clear that even the most vaunted national pastimes are being subjected to digital change. How can MVPDs, programmers and the leagues themselves develop their digital distribution businesses and simultaneously maintain or even grow the linear piece? Can sports continue to hold the multichannel bundle together? Can league licensing costs continue to rise forever? Are leagues like the NFL reaching saturation? Will we see transactional models, such as pay-per-view, assume a larger role in distribution? This panel will holistically examine the future business models of sports on TV.
